India's first of the six french designed Indian manufactured Scorpene class submarines will soon head of the final trials in the month of September before being handed over to the navy. The INS Kalvari the first of the lot weighing over 1000 tons has completed the preliminary trials and is now gonna conduct it's last of trials. It so far completed the Basin trials and Harbor acceptance trials in April 2016 and commenced sea trials on 1 May 2016. Also the indigenous DRDO Air Independent Propulsion system (AIP) is ready to be tested. Also, the submarine variant of the DRDO manufactured Varunastra torpedo is to be test fired in the same month. The decision for the heavy weight torpedo to be used in the submarines has been kept on hold so far there are two contender for $150 million contract. The SeaHake torpedo from Germany's Atlas Elektronic and the French made F-21 is also being considered. The government plans to induct 3 more submarines which has been in the contract clause to act as a stopgap for the depleting submarine fleet.
