A report by Hindustan times reports that Russia has agreed to lease another submarine from the Akula class to the Indian Navy. According to the report during the Inter-governmental meeting between Russia and India on the sidelines of BRICS summit held in Goa was finalized. The deal is reported to be worth $2 billion. The attack submarine would arrive in India by 2021. There were numerous reports stating that an Indian delegation was in Russia for the leasing of this attack submarine and India was reportedly interested in the more capable Yasen class submarine. But, it is clear now that the submarine is from the Akula class which is deemed as one of the most deadly attack submarine in the world. The Indian navy's first nuclear submarine INS Arihant is said to be loosely based on the Akula Class submarine which has also been commissioned recently. The submarine which has been selected is not clear whether it is K-322 Kashalot or the Irbis which have partially completed their construction due to the lack of funds from the Russian government. Technically India would be getting a new submarine. The lease for INS Chakra is gonna end by 2018 and according Russian sources India has the option to buy it. So, it would be interesting to see what would be the end result.
