A latest report by IHS Jane's states that the Indian army has asked the ordnance factory board to supply the excalibur rifle to the Army. The report states that an unspecified number of prototypes is to be supplied to the army for it's infantry and specialized counter-insurgency units. This is being done so trials can be conducted simultaneously and the trials would take place at different environment. Before the army shortlists or selects a foreign 7.62x51 mm rifle that would be procured directly and another few thousands would be produced at home over the next few years. The rifle is an upgraded version of the INSAS rifle which has been facing issues since it's inception. Due to the rifle's modular design the rifle can be converted from 5.56x45 mm to 7.62x39 mm by removing the upper cover. The Excalibur rifle is a gas-operated, selective-fire weapon has a foldable butt, a MIL-STD-1913 'Picatinny' rail system for sights, sensors, and bipods. Its polycarbonate magazine is an improvement compared to that of the INSAS rifle, which is known to frequently crack in extreme hot and cold climates as stated by soldiers who complain that the rifle regularly jams and the magazine crack under extreme climatic conditions.
